No, Nixon’s Reindeer are not endangered.  I don’t believe they exist outside of this blog and some random challenge phrase generator.  (See intro post.)  I’m talking about those of us who grew up in the 60’s and have retained most of the beliefs that we so passionately believed in 40 years ago.

You know what?  I’m proud to be one of the last of the 60’s-70’s era bleeding heart liberals.  Nowadays, I call myself a Progressive, since that is more descriptive of my ideas and ideals.  But if I’m called a BHL, I will proudly accept what I consider to be an accolade.
HCR is a blessing for our family because I now can stop worrying about what would happen if Julia got sick with no real health insurance.  To prepare for her overseas mission trip, I spent at least $1500 for immunizations for her.  I was glad to do it because the specter of her getting sick from a preventable disease overshadowed anything as trivial as money.  But what about the families who are not as materially blessed as ours?  What must they feel knowing that the children they love just as deeply as I love my only child are now vulnerable to the whims of fate with respect to their health insurance?  HCR fixes that for parents like me.

I have tried to wend my way through life keeping in mind the precept of “noblesse oblige” – because of the intellectual gifts with which I have been endowed, I feel that I have a “noble obligation” to give back to society.  Or, if one would like to cast this in biblical terms see Luke 12:48.  (Much will be required from everyone to whom much has been given. But even more will be demanded from the one to whom much has been entrusted. [ISV])

Why Nixon’s Reindeer? March 24, 2010

Why such an absurd name for a blog and what is it about?  I have no idea what this blog is about except for thoughts that I feel like expressing at a given moment.

But, I can explain “Nixon’s Reindeer”:  when I was at some now forgotten website I had to type in one of those challenge pass phrases that indicated that I was a real human being rather than some webbot.  The phrase truly was “Nixon’s Reindeer”.  I was so taken by the absurdity of that combination of words that I vowed it would be the name of my blog if I ever chose to write one.

And so, I give you “Nixon’s Reindeer” … flashy graphics to follow.
